Porsche Cup Snetterton 30/07/2007
Two podiums for Caine and Paragon at Snetterton
Michael Caine added two more podium finishes to his impressive 2007 season during rounds 13 and 14 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Snetterton (28/29 July). The results keep him fourth in the overall championship standings with six races still to run.
Caine, from Newmarket, is racing for Sussex-based Paragon Porsche this season and is battling with former Le Mans racer Sam Hancock for fourth in the overall championship standings in his 400bhp Porsche 911GT3 Cup car, which is prepared by Team Parker Racing.
On Saturday, Caine qualified third fastest at his home track, where the Porsches are reaching more than 150mph on the main straight. He averaged more than 100mph for the lap with a time that was less than a fifth of a second away from the pole position time.
"We do need to find a little bit more time," but it's very close and we're all pushing very hard," said Caine. At the start of the first race, Caine got a great start but could not quite find the gap he needed to grab second place. Instead, he settled into third and led the chase of Tim Harvey and Steven Kane. It was always a tough race, run at a very fast pace, and Caine closed right in on Kane over the second half of the race. However, when mounting a big attack on Kane at the Esses, Michael ended up losing a little ground and had to concentrate on defending third place from Sam Hancock.
Sunday's race netted another third place in front of a big crowd and Michael again bagged a podium finish behind Harvey and Hancock. In the early laps he had to race hard to get ahead of Kane, but once into third the gap to the cars ahead was too big for him to make any more progress.
"That the best we were going to get. I think we still need to find a bit better traction out of the slow corners. But two podiums is a good result for the weekend."
Next destination for the Carrera Cup GB is Brands Hatch (Kent) over the weekend of 18/19 August.
